What is a GFCI outlet?

A GFCI (ground-fault circuit interrupter) outlet is a special receptacle that cuts power instantly if it detects an electrical imbalance, protecting users from shock near water sources like kitchen sinks and countertops.

A GFCI outlet, or ground-fault circuit interrupter, is an electrical receptacle that detects imbalances in current flow and shuts off power within milliseconds to prevent electrocution. Unlike standard outlets, GFCI outlets have built-in sensors that respond to dangerous electrical faults rather than relying solely on circuit breakers.

In Connecticut kitchens, GFCI protection is mandated by code for all countertop outlets within six feet of a sink, as well as island and peninsula countertops. Kitchen islands with no wall edge typically require GFCI outlets as well. When a GFCI outlet trips, it disables the outlet until manually reset. Frequent tripping can indicate a serious fault and warrants inspection.
