What is the difference between quartz and quartzite?

Quartz is an engineered stone made from crushed quartz mixed with resins, while quartzite is a natural metamorphic rock formed under heat and pressure in the earth.

The names sound identical but the materials are entirely different. Quartz is engineered stone: crushed quartz crystals (usually 90 percent) combined with polyester or epoxy resin and pigments to create a uniform, non-porous surface. Quartzite, by contrast, is a natural stone quarried from the earth. It forms when sandstone undergoes intense heat and pressure deep underground, transforming into a hard metamorphic rock composed mainly of quartz grains fused together.

The distinction matters for kitchen countertops because the materials behave differently. Engineered quartz is stain-resistant and non-porous by design, requires no sealing, and offers consistent color and pattern. Quartzite is also quite durable, but it remains porous enough to need periodic sealing to resist staining. Quartzite also tends to chip more easily than engineered quartz and can etch if exposed to acidic substances. Quartzite offers natural variation in appearance and a more rustic aesthetic, while quartz provides modern uniformity and engineered patterns.

The naming confusion is common in Connecticut kitchens because both materials contain quartz, but their origins and properties are distinct.
